Dachshund varieties: six UK profiles
In the UK, Dachshunds are listed in two sizes — standard and miniature — and three coat types in each: smooth-haired, long-haired and wire-haired. That makes six separate profiles. Choose the right size-and-coat combination, then check its care guidance rather than assuming every Dachshund has the same needs.
Names and distinctions checked against the Royal Kennel Club’s breed listing and FCI’s Dachshund varieties. These listings describe breed standards, not the temperament or health of an individual.
Find the Dachshund you are searching for
| Coat | Standard Dachshund | Miniature Dachshund |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth-haired — A short, smooth coat. | Dachshund (Smooth Haired) | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) |
| Long-haired — A longer coat that needs different upkeep. | Dachshund (Long Haired) | Dachshund (Miniature Long Haired) |
| Wire-haired — A harsher, wire-textured coat. | Dachshund (Wire Haired) | Dachshund (Miniature Wire Haired) |
Is “smooth-haired Dachshund” the same as “miniature smooth-haired Dachshund”? No. Both share the smooth coat label, but these are separate UK size varieties. Follow the standard or miniature link above for the specific profile.
Why does an international source list nine? FCI recognises an additional rabbit/Kaninchen size with the same three coat types. This page covers the six UK size-and-coat listings, not all nine FCI combinations. We do not currently publish rabbit-size profiles.
What to compare before choosing
Consider the individual’s exercise, grooming, body condition, age and health, then discuss any relevant screening with a vet and a responsible rescue or breeder. The linked pages explain their care sources and limitations; an attractive coat or smaller size is not a guarantee of an easier match.
- Compare standard smooth-haired with miniature smooth-haired.
- Compare standard long-haired with miniature long-haired.
- Compare standard wire-haired with miniature wire-haired.
Assess a selected Dachshund against your routine, or compare individual profiles. Doggy Match shows evidence and uncertainty, not a guarantee of compatibility.
UK Royal Kennel Club standard updated 1 April 2025; FCI variety listing reflects its 2021 standard. Both consulted 19 October 2026. Distinct coat descriptions follow official standards; breed-health and life-expectancy claims remain on individually sourced profiles.
