Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle?
The Royal Kennel Club recognises three Poodle varieties by size in the UK: Toy, Miniature and Standard. Toy is the smallest and Standard the largest in the breed standards. That matters when planning lifting, transport, equipment and space, but does not predict an individual dog's temperament, health or fit with your home.

How do the UK Poodle sizes differ?
UK breed-standard heights are measured at the shoulder and describe the breed standard, not guaranteed dimensions for a puppy or adult pet. The everyday care columns are broad Royal Kennel Club breed-listing categories, not medical or individual exercise prescriptions.
| Poodle | UK height standard | Grooming listing | Exercise listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toy Poodle | Under 28 cm | Every day | Up to 1 hour/day |
| Miniature Poodle | 28 cm to under 38 cm | Every day | Up to 1 hour/day |
| Standard Poodle | Over 38 cm | Every day | Up to 1 hour/day |
Does Toy mean easy to look after?
Not automatically. All three Poodle listings put grooming in the daily category. A smaller dog's equipment may be easier to transport, but coat upkeep, companionship and practical cover during your working day still take planning. Compare the sources in each individual profile.
What about shedding and allergies?
The Royal Kennel Club listings use a non-shedding coat category for all three varieties. Non-shedding does not mean allergy-free. An allergic person's response cannot be predicted from the breed name. Meet the individual dog and discuss relevant clinical concerns with an appropriate professional.
For the allergy distinction, see the RSPCA’s pet-allergy guidance, checked 31 October 2026.
Why do some international lists show four sizes?
The FCI Poodle nomenclature lists Standard, Medium, Miniature and Toy. The UK Royal Kennel Club lists three varieties. These are different registration systems, so the FCI's Medium is not a fourth UK variety for this site. Check which authority an advert or breeder is referring to.
Which Poodle should you explore?
Check the correct size variety before assessing exercise, grooming, costs and the specific dog's background. Plan for a normal Tuesday, not only weekend walks.
